Sarcoptic Mange

Sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) is caused by mites that burrow into the skin. This condition causes intense itching and is highly contagious. It can transiently affect humans who make contact with dogs harboring this mite. Clinical signs include inflamed, red skin and intense itching on the head, ears, elbows, and hocks. It can eventually spread to the entire body if left untreated. All in-contact dogs should be treated and all bedding should be cleaned thoroughly. Contact your veterinarian for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Female mites burrow into the skin and lay eggs in the tunnels that they form.

Larve and nymphs develop in these tunnels.

The patient response is often severe self-inflicted trauma.
