Dewclaw Removal

Dewclaw removal on the hind feet (front dewclaw removal is optional) should be performed at 3-5 days of age (do not remove dewclaws on Great Pyrenees). Using curved forceps/hemostats (the diagram displays scissors, but forceps are recommended), clamp at the base of the dewclaw and remove the protruding dewclaw. Leave the forceps clamped in place for 10 seconds. Remove the forceps and apply hemostatic powder or clotisol liquid. It is important to remove the entire dewclaw to eliminate the possibility of regrowth.
